ART and BERNITA (Mimi) HICKEY
Track Operator
1980s
Dallas County Cycle Park
Art and Mimi Hickey opened up Dallas County Cycle Park in 1982 on a piece of owned property in Combine, Texas that formerly was a Hickey family owned motocross track that was closed because of the noise injunction.
The new age style track brought some new ideas to the blossoming sport of BMX with such things as a large AstroTurf covered starting hill, an automatic gate, an over and under bridge, and lights for night racing.
Art Hickey was always the first one to greet families as they came through the gates. Mimi was the head chef at the concession stand, where the world's most famous cheese burgers rolled off the grill.
The track was eventually moved closer to town in 1985 where DCCP 2 was created on a piece of property on Bruton Road. The new location set new records for attendance and moto counts, never before seen in Texas and later was ranked as the #2 ABA track in the nation.
The BMX world lost Art Hickey on a Wednesday night race in 1986, when he passed away on the first obstacle on the front straight. He would not have wanted it any other way. BMX was his life and bringing joy to families was his passion.
