Started racing in 1999, had my first pro win in 2005. To my knowledge I hold the record for the quickest time from novice to pro win at 6 years. Multiple gold cup and state wins as amateur. Turned A Pro in 2002, had multiple podiums in A Pro and Pro Cruiser. 1st place A Pro Buckeye Nationals 2005. 1st place A Pro Super Nationals 2005. 2006 turned AA in New Mexico. I did freestyle as well and was known for doing backflips during races. I was also the first person to do a front flip at a race. Shortly after turning AA I went full time freestyle. Competed in multiple Mountain Dew Action Sports Tours and was the first person to do a cliffhanger on a BMX bike. 2014 I built and opened Rebel Run Sports Camp, a summer training camp for BMX riders.

My Texas (TX-5) racing career spanned from 1982 - 1987 where I earned a TOP 10 District number in each of those years.
I raced again for one season in 1996 while living in San Diego, CA and raced under district CA-02. During that season, I placed at every national I entered (results below) and earned the District #1 plate that year as well as the NAG #5 plate.
No longer racing but I continue to attend BMX races throughout the country to reunite with old friends & promote our sport whenever & wherever possible!

National wins and or Mains-
* During my racing career I had more than 50 Main Gates at Nationals around the country.
* I achieved more than 25 National Event wins on both 20" and Cruiser class
* I made the mains at over 10 Grands Nation Events winning The Grands twice.
*Race of Champions- I won the ROC twice on 20" bikes and three times for the cruiser class allowing me to carry the Red/Orange #1 plate for numerous years.
* Gold Cup Championship- I won the 20" Class Gold cup as well as the Cruiser class Gold Cup twice
* National Rankings- Held the National #7 and National #16 plates for Cruiser Class in the late 80's as well as the National #16 plate for 20" bikes
* National Age Group- I held the # 2 National Age Group plate for cruiser in 1989 finishing behind Kenny May who won the National #1 title
Throughout my career I had numerous photos and acknowledgements in BMX Plus and BMX Action Magazines. I have been the person of spotlight for numerous "Zines" such as Carl Liens Zine and many others. Carl Lien actually had T-shirts made of one of the jumping contests I won.
I took about a 5-year layoff at the beginning of my 20's and came back as an A Pro for the Dallas Cowtown Nationals where I places 3rd on Saturday and won the Sunday race. After a shattered heal bone racing in California I was forced to retire for good, but I have started riding again with my 6-year-old son who is starting to show an interest in the sport so who knows, you may see me in the 50+ races very soon....

I was the 1989 18 and over year end flatland champion for the Texas AFA in the expert class. Got fourth place in the Indy 2-hip mini ramp comp in 1990. Got fourth place in the Vancouver 2-hip mini ramp pro class 1991. I don’t really save trophies so don’t really remember all the placing. I mostly Ride real street or mini ramps and am known for pioneering or inveting new tricks like vertical 50 50 stalls on street signs, hop over nose grinds on rails and spines, crank arm grinds and things like that. I am known for doing new tricks in videos and magazines more than competition placings. I hope that is helpful. I wrote all this on my IPhone so I hope I don’t mess anything up. Thanks. Sheps🤘
Sponsors… My bike company Homeless bikes, Trend bike source/ Empire BMX, Airwalk, Etines, Hoffman bikes. Created and starred in all three Homeless bikes videos with my Partner Dave Parrick (who went on create videos for Mongoose, 2-hip, S and M, etnies, Empire). Co-Created and starred in all three Trend videos. Also Stared in videos by Props, Poorboy, 2-hip and countless others. I have also filmed for countless other bmx videos. Created the world Famous 9th street trails with the original 9the street digging crew or the heckle Bench crew or whatever you want to call us.after the AFA went out of business started my own series of Street and Flatland Contests. Helped Mat Hoffman start the BS BMX Contest series. I worked as a Judge and sports organizer for ESPN for every XGames, XTrials and B3 Contest from the very beginning in 1996-2001. Also Judged and sports organized every Gravity Games from the first year in 1999-2002 for NBC. Also was a Staff writer for Ride BMX magazine from issue number two until 1997. Of all that I am probably proudest of starting my own bike company Homeless with my own James Shepherd pro model the Mack that inspired other riders to start their own bike company’s.

My BMX years were some of the best memories of my life and on the absolute BEST team I could ever be a part of, FACTORY BKS!
( a small factory team, trying to be a positive and Godly influence and scraping by on pennies and teamwork 😉
Although I was never the fastest, smoothest or most talented, I always tried my hardest and by the grace of God and some grit and determination ended up with some pretty satisfying results. And having a ton of fun along the way. Going out on top as NAG 1 in my last full year of racing before kids came along was the icing on the cake.
I will forever cherish these memories. Thank you Carl Lein for believing in Kathy and me, for all the support, and for the honor of the nomination 🙂 We are touched.

- Racer Highlights 2024 –
o Between 2004 and 2009, my dad and I travelled across Oklahoma and Texas offering clinics and this has always been something I have enjoyed. As 2023 was ending I felt it was important to give back to our local riders and I noticed there are quite a few programs for the beginner riders in DFW, but nothing to help advance our intermediate and expert riders. These advanced racers would ask me every time I was at practice if they could get on the gate or do straights with me, just trying to get help at every opportunity they had. This is what sparked the development of my Advanced Rider Program and I worked with the track operator at Desoto BMX to come up with a schedule to implement it. As it has gained popularity in the last 4 months, we have increased the frequency from once a month to bi-weekly. I have started shifting my focus from my own racing to developing the riders that participate in this program.

I’ve had a passion for everything on two wheels for as long as I can remember. I still have a passion for bikes and continue to participate and compete in several bike related disciplines. Now well into my 50’s, I still love to shred downhill trails on my mountain bike and smash the send button on some of the biggest jumps in the great state of Texas. Below are some of my most recent bike related accomplishments.
2009 - 2011
In 2009 I returned to my BMX racing roots, competing in local and state BMX races. I introduced my two boys to the awesome sport of BMX in 2010 (ages 4 and 6 at that time).
2010 – ABA State Series – Overall 4th Place 41-45 cruiser
2011 – ABA State Series – Overall 2nd Place age group 41-45 class
2020 - Present
I have been an avid mountain biker since the late 1990’s. I’m still active to this day competing in state and regional competitions, trail building and promoting the sport.

Keep on shreddin’!
It is an honor to be nominated for the Texas BMX Hall of Fame – freestyle category! I was a BMX racer from 1981-1984, competing in local, state and national races throughout the southern united states. I retired from BMX racing at the end of the 1984 season to focus on freestyle exclusively.
Freestyle
1982 - Built my first quarter pipe using the design plans from BMX Action magazine. Later that year I performed at my first freestyle show in Odessa, TX at age 13.
1983 – Designed and built a custom quarter pipe and trailer for transporting the quarter pipe, kick-turn and jump ramps. The quarter pipe was designed to be disassembled for transporting. The quarter pipe was 8’ tall and 7’ wide and featured an 8’ flyout deck.
1984 - Started Jefco Freestyle Team. Although I was the only rider performing at the shows, the Jefco Freestyle team included myself as well as family and friends. I was the only performer, but I was fortunate to have a dedicated team that worked hard to put on a professional show that appealed to all ages. We performed freestyle shows at grand openings, county fairs, home and garden shows, boat shows, private parties as well as other events. The Jefco Freestyle Team was honored to be one of the headliners at the Midland Sesquicentennial Celebration in the summer of 1985.
1984-1986 - Performed Freestyle Shows in Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, San Angelo, Austin. Freestyle shows included flatland routines, aerial tricks and a grand finale gap jump over six 55-gallon barrels through a ring of fire!
1985 – Participated in AFA (American Freestyle Association) competitions in southern California.
1986 – Competed in the newly formed Texas AFA (American Freestyle Association) competitions in Texas.
1986 - Joined the Texas GT Freestyle Team. Performed Shows in Midland, Odessa, San Angelo, Austin
1986 - Performed at the 4th of July Celebration Downtown Austin with Mat Hoffman and other top freestyle riders.
Media
Appeared on the Front Page of the Midland Reporter telegram two times. Total photo appearances six times including a two-page story about the Jefco Freestyle Team, training and competition as well as numerous write-ups in the Odessa American Newspaper.
Two local TV news stories.
Appeared in TV commercials for my sponsor - Peyton’s Bikes (until recently, the oldest bike shop in the great state of Texas).
Was mentioned in BMX Plus magazine after winning the 16 under expert ramp competition in Huntington Beach, CA - 1985. “Another guy to keep an eye out for is Jeff Latimer, from Midland, TX. He left the 16 Under Expert class in ruins with eight foot inverts and can-can airs. Killer style too.”

- Super Nationals - 2nd & 2nd
- Grands - 3rd
- finished the year at NAG 3
2000 - the only paper I have is for the Super Nationals and I placed 1st & 1st. In August I was NAG 3 in 41 & over girl cruiser. I’ve got nothing else in my BMX folder!!
Raced for Websters Bikes in 1997, 1998 and half of 1999. Joined up with Oshman’s the summer of 1999 when we didn’t see eye-to-eye with one of the sponsors. When we approached Oshman’s they said they’d love to have us, our family was an icon in the racing community.
We signed back with Websters/Diamondback the winter of 1999 when the trouble making sponsor left Webster.
I was called Mom of the year and BMX hero in the BMXer and our family was noted several times for being the ‘fast family” that could win a team sheet on our own (for a while all 5 family members raced).
I promoted BMX whenever I could and often had photos and articles published in the local paper, especially after our ‘summer tours’ when we’d come home with a trailer of big trophies. Our two girls also raced with NAG numbers. Our son was, unfortunately, in the same age group as Bubba Harris and the big guys, always on the edge of a NAG.
We almost bought Armadillo when Barbara wanted to sell, that’s how dedicated we were to the sport. We volunteered whenever a turn judge was needed or a track needed groomed.
I know those are ‘accomplishments’ but it gives you an idea of how we lived and breathed BMX!

2/14/81 - 2/14/82 - we were considered Powderpuffs & I ranked at #467 at the beginning of my bmx career. DOT Helicopters sponsored me this year.
2/14/82 - 2/14/83 - I quickly rose in the points rankings and ended the year as #55 (as we were still ranked with the boys). HP Oilfield Services sponsored me at this time.
2/14/83 - 2/14/84 - I continued to race hard and made every big race I could afford and ended this year as G2 (girls were ranked separately at this time). I was following in the footsteps of Candi Jones at that time and my goal was to get that #1 plate. At this time I was picked up by Rebel Racing as my sponsor.
2/14/84 - 2/14/85- After racing the various nationals, double points, triple points races, & regularly racing at least 3 to 4 times per week at local tracks I was able to gain my #1 girls plate. Rebel Racing was my sponsor.
1982 - Lonestar National - Won 1st place. It was super exciting to bring home that national trophey to such a new track in the industry.
I raced the Grand Nationals two different years. I am trying to remember dates. One year I made it to the semi-mains and the other year I missed the main by a 1/2 tire length. I will always remember that race as a couple of girls got squirrely out of the gate but I was able to maintain and get back on track. Had there been another 10 feet of track I would of made it. It happens! I will definitely never forget sitting in the gate next to Cheri Elliott and in size comparison scared me to death lol.
I can say on a regular race night against the boys I usually always finished top 3. When racing the girls at home I would finish first as our ages ranged and I was the next to the oldest girl racer out there and had more experience than the others. This is back when they decided 3 girls could make a class. I preferred racing the boys as it pushed me harder to compete.
I was quite competitive at the double & triple point races through my years racing I qualified to the mains in both boys and girls classes and usually would finish in the top 3 in both classes as well. The double and triple point races had more girls in attendance and some of those Texas girls gave me some fierce competition.
Even though I raced heavily, I wished that I had more exposure to the actual national races, but the funds were just not available for those. I know I ran the Amarillo National early in my career and the Lubbock National shortly after. I qualified for the main in Lubbock, but it's so many years back and I could not find documentation on those. The Lone Star National I took home first place. Nationals in Texas were really only available about once a year back in the day. I was able to attend the Grand Nationals twice over my career.
I made a commercial for CC Supercross back in the early 80's wherein I rode up on the first jump - stopped, pulled off my helmet and said....And Girls Can Race Too! It was fun to be involved in that.
The most memorable times I can remember was when you were racing a boys class at the larger races and would go check what moto you were in. One of the riders in the class would be sitting there telling his bud...don't worry we have some girl in our class we will all qualify. That's when I usually would blow them out of the gate in the first moto. You earned mad respect at that given time and believe me, every guy in your class knew your name! Those were some of the best times.
I have to say that obtaining my #1 Girls plate was my biggest accomplishment in racing. I worked hard for that plate and had many girls chasing my tail at that given time in the Tex-5 district.
BMX racing was a huge part of my childhood and I wouldn't trade it for the world. My grandfather and I were thick as thieves. Everyone called him Grandpa and he built that awesome starting gate at CC Supercross that everyone talked about. We contributed to our track as much as we could (as money allowed) and the track operators & sponsors kept me racing! I will forever be grateful to my Grandpa, the track operators, and Rebel Racing for allowing me the funds to succeed & perform in this sport.
Thank you for your consideration to being inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame!

GrandNationals in Oklahoma City - was able to make 2 of these during the mid 80's.
#1 Girl Points/Plate for Tex-5
Won various double and triple point races throughout the year - specific dates are hard to remember.
Weekly Regular Race Schedule was as follows:
San Antonio Thursday Nights, Corpus Christi Friday Nights, and back to Corpus Christi for Sundays. Back in the 80's BMX was new to girls, so racing the boys was the only option available to me.
My grandfather drove me to every double points, triple points, and nearby nationals that we could afford. There were many times I raced the boys as the girls classes did not make at some of the larger races as well. I took home various top 3 spots almost all out of town races within boys and girls classes. We completed 3 different Texas Tours.
While racing the Texas Tours, my grandfather bought a small car wherein we hooked a bike trailer to the back of the car. We did not think of what we would do with the tropheys won. We would send back the trophies with various other riders from our region. We stayed in tents, trailers, and/or would bunk at the local KOA. It was one of the best times of my childhood.
Money was an issue as we did not have the entry fees, etc. to run the bigger races and pay weekly for my entry fees until I was able to obtain a factory sponsor. My mother made my first pair of leathers & I worked for the track during my racing days in the consession stand and gathering trash at the end of the night. The track operator would pay for my entry fees in lieu of me working for them.
I received from our local track awards assembly at the end of the year: 1982 - Girl Newcomer of the Year & 1983 - Best Accomplished Girl Rider. These were local awards our track would give out to local riders.
1984 - Received #1 Girl in TEX-5 District.
I want to thank everyone for nominating me and letting me be a part of such a great organization. 🙂

What made me stand out in this sport?
Local and statewide dominant force in the expert, open and cruiser class through ages eleven through thirteen.
Long after I stopped racing BMX, when friends and I were remising and was asked, “What were the good ole days?”. I always took a moment to think, was it playing football, baseball, and track in high school? Was it when I was awarded a baseball scholarship or traveled the world when I was in the film industry? No. It was the days I raced BMX as an early teen. I loved to race BMX. I loved the culture. I loved that your BMX friends were family, and my family was a part of the BMX culture. I missed those days.
I guess my BMX story started when Santa gave me a rough and tuff bike when I was nine or ten years of age. My friend, Bernard Allen Anderson, lived down the street and I would always ride my bike down the street to his house to play football. The football field would be three front yards with every driveway being the first down. One day Bernard told me about how much fun he had BMX bicycle racing before we played a solid game of yard football. The following week he told me again what fun he had, and I should come with him the next weekend. I said, “OK” as I hiked the football and ran past him for a touchdown. The ride back home that day was filled with stories Bernard told me of how much fun he had riding and racing his bike. His excitement created my own excitement. As soon as I got home, I asked my dad if we could go with Bernard and his dad to try BMX racing. My dad called Bernie Anderson and worked out the details and the next weekend, after a short trip to the store for helmet, we tagged along with Bernard Allen, Bernard Ray, and family to the Corales BMX track.
After a year of racing at the two San Antonio local tracks my dad and Bernie Anderson, with a few others help and support, opened a BMX track called Lonestar BMX Raceway and that gave me the opportunity to be a part of the BMX community week in and week out.
After the Grand Opening, the Lonestar BMX Raceway became a race favored location to racers, allowed me the opportunity to gain my confidence and raise my experience level to successfully compete in races across Texas. We traveled to Austin, Cibolo, Corpus Christi, and Houston quite frequently. Our standard weekend would consist of racing Friday nights in Austin, Saturday in San Antonio, and Sunday in Cibolo and or the surrounding area. You always knew the regulars and encouraged others to be a part of the fantastic experience.
As time passed, my competition locally consisted of a few BMX Hall of Famers, Craig Marsh, Bernard Anderson, Ricky Davis, and others. The races were always competitive, and the finals were a struggle, but I do remember coming out on top on most occasions in all three expert, open and cruiser classes. The local wins, number of races and multiple double and triple points wins allowed me to be a top ten points winner several years in a row.
The sport carried over beyond race day and into the week when BA, Tommy Smith, others, and I would ride our bikes all over the neighborhood, woods, and rain basins to test one another’s skills. Who could jump the highest, do the best trick and or jump the furthest.
In late 1980, my family, the Andersons, Smiths, and others started traveling to attend double, triple points and tour races all over Texas. Our travel trailer and van, along with Anderson’s motorhome caravanned to Nationals not only in Texas but in Oklahoma, and Arizona. I remember flying to Seattle, Springfield, and driving to Florida, and Louisiana to race in nationals where I was able to place on occasions. We would never miss the local Lonestar Nationals that were in Austin and San Antonio.
Some of my greatest memories are when I beat Steve Veltman in the Gold Cup Championships where I won the Class Champion Award. Wowed quite a few people in Austin Texas when I beat Kyle Fleming to win the eleven-expert class at the Schwinn Lonestar National. It was fun to brag at the time that I beat a GT Factory rider on a GT Bicycle. My fondest memory was when I beat Doug Davis in a race at Lonestar Raceway in San Antonio. After the race he pulled me aside and said that I need to start racing as many nationals as I can, because I have game. I felt proud that day.
The best summer I had BMX racing was in 1982, when I participated in the 1982 Rebel Racing Texas Tour. The tour consisted of 28 plus races in Texas and Louisiana. What a time! So many races in a jammed pack time, hanging with friends and racers like Brock Bruce, Bernard Anderson, Archie Chankin, Lea Chankin, Cody Smart, Racer Yoeman, Steve Veltman, Tommy Smith, Ricky Davis, and others.
Time passes, memories fade and we evolve, but I am proud to have made a memory with the short time I participated in BMX. I do wish I had been able to continue with the sport in my later teens, but it just wasn’t God timing. Recently, I attended the latest BMX Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and the joy and happiness I felt rekindled that sense of community and plan to continue participating and supporting the BMX Hall of Fame.
I want to thank those whose nominated me, and I am grateful to be a part of such and amazing culture, which influenced me to be a better man.
Sincerely,
James aka Jimmy Chankin
